A ground-mounted array sits on a racking frame you can walk up to. The technician stands beside the panels with a water-fed pole and works down each row. No ladder to position. No roof to climb. A roof-mount flips that. The crew positions ladders and plans a route across the roof, working around pitch and story height. On a two-story roof with a steep pitch and limited ladder placement, the setup can take longer than the cleaning itself. The panels are the same product either way. The labor around them is the difference you pay for.
The safety picture changes with height
Roof work brings fall exposure, and Cal/OSHA fall-protection rules apply. A professional crew rigs harnesses and anchors as standard practice, and every ladder position is a decision about what sits under it. That setup is billed time, and it is why access moves a roof-mount quote more than panel count does.
A ground mount removes the height question entirely. No fall exposure, no roof-edge work. What stays is the electrical reality. The mount changes how the crew reaches the panels, not what touches them. Both configurations get deionized water held under 10 parts per million of dissolved minerals and a soft-bristle brush, with no pressure washing. The water dries off the glass with no mineral film, which matters because panels make power by letting light reach the cells under the glass. The ground mount is the honest DIY case
If you are going to clean panels yourself, a ground-mount array is the configuration where that is safe. You work from the ground with a soft brush and deionized, reverse-osmosis, or distilled water, on a cool part of the day. Light dust and pollen come off cleanly. Cleaning cost is one factor, not the decision
Do not read this as a case for installing ground mounts to save on cleaning. Cleaning access is a small line item next to the install itself. Roof space, yard space, shading, and looks decide the mount far more than the cleaning bill does. A roof-mount on a home with no yard for an array is still the right system for that property, and it still cleans safely on a normal schedule. If your system is already on a roof, none of this is a reason to move it.
