Why carports soil faster than a pitched roof
A carport canopy sits close to flat, and a flat panel doesn't shed rain the way a pitched roof does. Water runs off slowly and leaves dust behind, and over a dry East Bay summer that dust bakes onto the glass.
A parking lot puts two loads on the glass that a fenced rooftop does not. Traffic keeps dust moving across the asphalt below the canopy. Birds perch on the canopy edge and on the light poles beside it, and their droppings land in concentrated spots on the glass.
Twice a year covers most East Bay carports. A canopy with a resident bird population, or construction or farm dust nearby, usually needs quarterly service.
Getting equipment onto a canopy over a live parking lot
We run a SolarCleano F1 in its 47-inch configuration. It goes onto the canopy by lift, so nobody is working from ladders set between parked cars.

Commercial sites run the same canopy over a working parking lot. The crew cleans when the rows are clear, scheduled for evenings, weekends, or overnight.

How do you clean a solar carport with cars parked underneath?
We work from above. A lift puts the SolarCleano F1 up on the canopy, and nobody stands on ladders between the parked cars. School and business park visits usually happen on a weekend or overnight, when most of the lot is already empty.
When can a school district have its solar carports cleaned?
School districts usually have carports cleaned over a weekend, on a non-school day, or in June or July, when students and staff are off campus. Send the district calendar and your contractor access rules, and we'll schedule each site around them.
Do solar carports collect more soiling than rooftop arrays?
Usually, yes. A near-flat canopy holds dust that rain would rinse off a pitched roof, and the lot below adds traffic dust and bird droppings from the canopy edge and light poles.
How many panels does a carport array need before robotic cleaning is worth it?
